About the event

Kathleen  Thompson, the winner of the Newberry Library's Chicago Chapter DAR  Fellowship for education specialists to develop a digital education  project.

In the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th, women,  mostly volunteers, stepped forward to provide the lifesaving social  services that helped counteract urban social upset caused by the combined  force of industrialization, urbanization, and a huge wave of immigrants  from Europe and migrants from the American South. Kathleen Thompson's  project "These Are the Women Who Saved the Cities" is a way of disseminating information from the Newberry Library collections to increase our knowledge of these remarkable women.
